New Life for Former Kray Boozer
The former Artichoke Public House, located in the heart of Stepney E1, which closed its doors for the final time over 20 years ago, has a colorful past.
Featuring in John Pearson’s 1960’s biography of East London’s infamous Kray twins, A Profession of Violence, which has recently been reworked into the Tom Hardy film Legend, the Artichoke was a traditional estate Pub typical of many in the East End, frequented by the Krays and their crew.
Having acquired the property on an unconditional basis, Kingsbury’s planning team, in conjunction with clients Regent Land & Development and architects Stephen Davy Peter Smith, have successfully obtained planning permission for the redevelopment of the site with a contemporary styled scheme of 9 apartments.
The area around Stepney has come a long way from the sights Ronnie & Reggie would have been familiar with, and is now the home to international businesses, high value residential property and a new Crossrail terminal at Whitechapel, although a few characters still remain!
Construction is expected to start on site early in 2016.
